Intellogist has followed the development of ProQuest Dialog from the announcement of the product to a demonstration of the new system, and we’ve been impressed with the combination of intuitive search and navigation features and broad coverage of most files available on the the Dialog and (now discontinued) DataStar platforms. ProQuest is still in the process of transferring all databases previously available on the Dialog platforms to the new ProQuest Dialog system, but the migration process for customers from Dialog to ProQuest Dialog has already begun. ProQuest has released a number of training and information tools to get Dialog users familiar with the ProQuest Dialog platform, and a migration leadership team and Global Customer Support team have been put in place to ensure a smooth transition. Most intellectual property databases have not yet been added to ProQuest Dialog, but many important scientific databases are already accessible on the platform. The full transition is slated to take place in 2013 (and all intellectual property databases will eventually be added to the platform), so prior art searchers should learn about the features of this important new platform that will replace all Dialog products (and has already replaced DataStar products).

Latest News: The Migration Leadership Team and Global Customer Support Team
You can follow the latest news about the migration process for Dialog products by checking the Major Recent Updates sections of the DialogClassic and Classic Web and DialogPro Intellogist Reports. In December 2012, ProQuest released a Migration Update that described the development of a five-part migration leadership team and the ongoing work of the Global Customer Support team:
In his November Update, Tim Wahlberg explained how plans for the Dialog migration to ProQuest Dialog were in full swing. A migration leadership team is now hard at work on this formidable task, focusing on five main aspects to ensure a smooth, successful migration:
- Back Office — making sure each customer has the correct access to licensed databases, contract terms, user accounts and more
- Customer Management — assessing customer migration needs and devising strategies accordingly
- Communications — keeping every customer abreast of the migration plan and progress as well as the customer role in the process. We will use multiple communication methods based on the variety of customer situations and needs, with the Chronolog and the Dialog service login page as core tools.
- Training and Support — providing the most relevant support documentation and resources
- Alert and Saved Search migration — working to migrate, translate and perform quality assurance on all legacy Dialog Alerts. Saved Searches also will be translated to the new syntax.
Key to this process is our Global Customer Support team, comprised of subject matter experts in North America and the international regions, each of whom possesses an advanced degree in their respective subject area. This is particularly important in the support of the Alert migration, including the special compliancy needs of our pharmaceutical customers.
Finally, to assist with the smooth transition, we will provide a period of parallel access to both legacy Dialog and ProQuest Dialog. During this time, customers can take full advantage of the extensive training and support materials, and also fully test Alerts to ensure they continue to produce desired results. As always, Global Customer Support will be available to assist as needed.

During the transition from the Dialog platform to ProQuest Dialog, you can use the following tools to learn about the coverage and search features of the ProQuest Dialog system, follow the latest Dialog migration news, and contact the Dialog support team:
- Dialog Migration Center - Check this page on the Dialog website for the latest migration updates, information for Dialog customers about planning the transition, information about the transference of alerts and saved searches from Dialog to ProQuest Dialog, and links to free training resources for ProQuest Dialog.
- Contact the Dialog Knowledge Center – Use this page to find the contact information for your local Dialog help desk. Call, email, or mail the Dialog Knowledge Center with technical support questions for both Dialog and ProQuest Dialog products. According to the Support section of the ProQuest Dialog Customer Information page, users can email their questions to Customer@dialog.com.
- Databases on ProQuest Dialog – View a list of all databases on ProQuest Dialog, organized by topic. Select a database link to view a short description of the file in a separate window. This section of the ProQuest Dialog Customer Information page also links to a list of ProQuest Dialog Databases A-Z (PDF), a list of all database descriptions, and a list of all available ProSheets (the ProQuest Dialog equivalent to Dialog Bluesheets). Prior art searchers can check this tab regularly to see if the intellectual property databases have been added to ProQuest Dialog yet.
- ProQuest Dialog Training and Support – Access a variety of training tools about ProQuest Dialog under this section of the Dialog website, including live web-based training (webinars), self-guided online training, downloadable search aids (guides, reference cards, etc.), access the new ProQuest Dialog Support Center, and view contact information for the Dialog Knowledge Center. Users can also find training information at the ProQuest Dialog Customer Information page.
- What’s New? for Dialog – This page lists the latest updates from Tim Wahlberg, migration updates, and links to articles from the most recent e-Newsletters published by Dialog (the Chronolog, Eye on Innovation, and Training Updates).
ProQuest Dialog will soon host all the files previously accessible on Dialog and DataStar, including a large collection of intellectual property and scientific databases that will be valuable sources of prior art for patent searchers. All patent searchers who currently use the Dialog platforms for their prior art searches should begin preparing for the migration to ProQuest Dialog that is coming in 2013, so use the resources listed above to train and plan for the transition to ProQuest Dialog!
