The patent information industry is a swift and deep river of information. There’s so much new info every day that one needs to come up with a plan just to stay abreast of the state of the profession. On the other hand, each distinct topic and subtopic could be delved into for days to years at a time. Consider Alien Property Custodian documents or F-Index/F-Terms — both subjects that are steeped in patent history and varying degrees of present-day relevance that can help one understand this industry.
With that in mind, in addition to Intellogist, it helps to have a variety of current awareness sources at hand with which to better navigate this information river.
Today I’ll be telling you a little bit about the Patent Information News publication from the European Patent Office (EPO). I’ll tell you what it comprises and why you should be following this free information source. Read on as we examine the Patent Information News!
The Patent Information News is a publication that is designed by the EPO to enlighten and edify patent information users, chiefly in Europe.
You might be asking yourself right off the bat…what does this have to do with me if I am involved in the patent industry outside of Europe? As you’ll see, the Patent Information News is a useful source of current events that cover the entire world of patents. For example, the most recent issue (PDF) touched on such worldwide issues as:
- Italian patent data – After all, Italian patent data is prior art just like US patent data
- Tips for Espacenet users – Useful to worldwide patent searchers utilizing this free search system
- News on inter-office relations, projects, and data sharing – Dealings between the IP5 (EPO, USPTO, SIPO, KIPO, and JPO) will shape the future of patent activity around the globe
From a production standpoint, the Patent Information news is top notch. The entire table of contents is bookmarked within the PDF for easy navigation and the layout is clean and filled with helpful screenshots.
Issuing quarterly, the Patent Information News is not always the most timely, but it makes up for that fact with the presence of exclusive news item revelations from the EPO as well as excellent summations of events that have taken place in the preceding three months.
In short, it’s a great place to start your journey of becoming better informed about the patent information world (right after you subscribe to this blog)!
